Remaking of Punggol estate on track

Dated Jun 23, 2010

HORSE riding, kayaking, and even beach volleyball - these are just some of the many activities future residents of Punggol will be able to enjoy once Singapore's first eco-town within Punggol is ready.

Blending in lush greenery, cascading waters, existing flora and fauna, and innovation, the Housing Board will be launching the nation's first waterfront public housing for sale in about a week.

This new waterfront estate, which features solar panels and rooftop gardens and will be completed by 2015, marks the progress of Punggol's Remaking Our Heartland project that was first announced in 2007 and which aims to also build the neighbourhood's mass by increasing the number of dwelling units.

To date, a sports and recreation centre, hockey stadium and community club have been completed. Besides a new town centre, there will also be a 4.2km waterway snaking through the heart of the neighbourhood and connecting with Sungei Punggol and Sungei Serangoon.

The waterway and promenades surrounding Punggol have been constructed to various themes to bring a little of everything to the residents. Some sandy coastal areas have been designed alongside boardwalks and a heritage trail.

Said Mr Wu Da Wu, 35, who took a day off his construction job to catch the exhibition on Tueaday: 'It looks great, and with the surrounding water, it's very soothing.'

Wedding Band Selection (18th Jun 2010)

Had been searching high & low for the wedding band these few days. Though its tiring but its all worthwhile getting something that we like. We went Bishan, Yishun, Sembawang and AMK (all the northern part). Finally make our selection at our last station @ AMK Hub - SK jewellery, which is also sister company of Soo Kee. Actually we quite like designs frm Goldheart too and its within our budget too (total $700 plus for a pair), but due to the fact that we wanted more choices for selection, so we went for more jewellery shops to compare their designs and prices. Finally got back to SK again, the same place where he got me the proposal ring! The ones we chosen are from the "Momento" series, 18K white gold. Though it has slightly exceeded our initial budget, at least we are satisfied with the design and colour. Reminder to bear in mind, note down the model # and prices from the shop visited and get namecard frm the shop assistance, so that it will be easier to trace back the model tat u wanted after comparision frm different shops.

Punggol Mosque up by 2013

$15m mosque will be most expensive one ever built here

A NEW mosque to come up in Punggol will be the most expensive one ever built here.

To cost $15 million, it will sit at the junction of Punggol Place and Punggol Field, near Punggol MRT station, and be up by 2013.

These details of what will be Singapore's 70th mosque came from Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim yesterday, when he opened Al-Mawaddah mosque in nearby Sengkang.

'Now that the site has been decided on, we can form a committee to raise funds and make preparations for the new mosque, God willing, for the people of Singapore,' said Dr Yaacob, who is also Minister for the Environment and Water Resources.

The mosque, on a site the size of 10 tennis courts, will serve about 4,000 worshippers, mostly Punggol residents, three-quarters of whom are aged 45 or under.

Mr Mohd Alami Musa, president of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis), said yesterday that the design of the mosque might well follow that of Al-Mawaddah, which had its soft opening in May last year.

Al-Mawaddah has eco-friendly features such as solar-powered lights and cooling vents. It is also one of the first mosques here to eschew the traditional Islamic dome. Its modern look is an outward sign of Muis' efforts to reach out to the nation's young Muslim families by designing its mosques to function also as centres of community life.

In a nod to Sengkang's relatively young population, Al-Mawaddah has, for example, a youth corner, classrooms, and a marriage solemnisation area.

The Punggol mosque will cost nearly twice what it would have cost just five years ago. Mr Alami said this was due to rising construction and land costs.

It will ease the strain on Al-Mawaddah, whose congregation swells past 6,000 on religious holidays, thrice the usual crowd, said its chairman Mohd Rafii Abdul Hamed.
